United Nations Recommended by the Navy, based on Royal Marines, the Pakistan Marines were established in 1 July 1971 to undertake riverine operations in East Pakistan. The Marines saw their first combat actions in amphibious operations through the Bangladesh Liberation War, preventing against the Indian Army. Due to poor combat efficiency within the warfare, excessive losses and casualties, and lack of ability to successfully counter the Indian Army, the Marines have been decommissioned by 1974. However, Marines continued to exist in its rudimentary type until 1988 to meet elementary security requirements of Pakistan Navy models. Historically, the air force has been closely dependent on U.S., Chinese, and French aircraft expertise to support its development, regardless of impositions of the Pressler amendment.
